More Material Hunting!

Today I asked my mom to accompany me going material hunting. We went to a series of material shops next to D'Best Fatmawati. This area is quite popular for all the assortments of materials available in the stores. Unfortunately there aren't as many stores here compared to Mayestik and Passer Baroe. One store can hold up to 4-story high of many types of materials in every color imaginable. I was able to find many cloths in perfect matching colors and patterns as my sketches. I brought my sketchbook along to compare all the different types of materials and see which ones would match best. The materials here is a bit more expensive than Mayestik and Passer Baroe, but they have got more than enough textures, patterns, and colors to choose from.

Below is the map I found on the internet which I used as a direction to get to the destination. the blue mark indicates D'Best Supermarket, Fatmawati. The material stores is on its south. click the thumbnail for a bigger picture.

Personal Project Meeting #10

20th February 2009

Items Discussed:
I showed Bu Sarah all of my 21 finished sketches, although I am thinking that perhaps it will be much easier if I scan them all and send them to Bu Sarah's email. That way she can look through it without us worrying of running out of time (since our meetings are quite short and we need to squeeze everything in that little amount of time). I suppose by giving her my blog URL (this blog i am writing in) it will be easier for her to check my journal, because it is on the internet and can be accessed any time of the day.

Achievements:
I am finished with my 21 designs, I'll just have to coordinate them per seasons. My Blog Journal is very much organized, have been updating it every time i make progress on the project.

Problems:
I will have to give the hard copy of the report on Tuesday 24th of February,2008, at least not the finished one but the progress I am having with the report. Things will need to catch up sooner with the Beijing Trip coming up and all the school assignments I will have to do.

I have read Jenisa Kamayana's journal entries and blogspot and the information provided is true, detailed and accurate.

My 21st (final) Sketch

Finally, I have come to my last and final sketch (for now, i might be adding things here and there in the future, as my ideas are sometimes hard to control). It is a design of a batik hot pants/simple shorts. This design is actually very simple, but the thought of how rare I see them around in Indonesia ( Until now, I only see batik in the form of either dress, or blouse, or blazer, things I see everyday at the mall which I personally think is tiresome to see). I came up with the idea to combine the batik with a different type of material, something stiff and in a matching color, on the band around the waist area of the shorts.

I decided to draw the sketch a little bit differently from how I usually draw it before. I only draw the bottom half part of the person wearing the shorts. It automatically highlights the shorts with all its batik patterns, with the drawing of a beautiful long legs to make the sketch a lot more interesting. I am planning to go to the material market soon to get more materials for the designs.

I personally chose 2 designs to be made with batik material because I would love to appreciate and expose the culture further ahead, and it had been quite a trend in here in Indonesia. Batik had been made and worn for a long time, in the early days people even used batik for everyday clothing, such as for saroengs and everyday-kebayas.

Here is a picture of the making of Batik, made with a simple tool called 'canting' and hot colored wax.

My 20th Sketch

I came up with the idea for my next design, which is actually my 20th of the project. For the first time I, I designed a long dress which comes up to the feet of the person. I was initially going for a simple summer dress like this:

But In the end i combined it with flaps on the center and heavy details on the chest area. To enhance the summer essence on the dress, I suppose flower prints, or flower-colored/patterned materials will be best to illustrate the seasonal theme of this simple dress. The sketch turned out to look very much glamorous and elegant, I spent quite a long time on it as it was pretty hard to draw the person's body shape and hair. But in the end I managed to look at my old sketches, including my practice sketches I have done a while ago to be able to draw a proportional body pose.

My 19th Sketch

My next design which i am working on right now takes form in a very pretty puffy dress. This strapless dress which i made was inspired by voluminized trends coming around the early 2009 in many fashion districts in the world. I suppose the making of it would be a lot harder than a normal dress, because it will need a special sewing skill to shape up the puffy part on the hips. I am now sketching the dress with the help of a picture from the internet to help me draw the body of the person wearing the dress. The dress looks perfect for formal occasion such as prom or birthday parties, and the style that i chose simply represents a teenager's sense of style for a great dress. When made short, this dress will look better than long or medium lengthed.

On the other hand, the color that I think would be best for this dress is dark colors, such as deep purple, maroon,or red or deep blue, with soft patterns on the material to enhance the glamorous feel of the dress.

My 18th Sketch

Today I am designing a winter or autumn coat with animal print details. The print i choose is zebra print, i picked this print because it's the most simple color we can get in any animal prints. The colors are black and white, also the material is very easy to find in any material market we can visit later on. This coat is a long coat, which reaches down to the hips of the person wearing it. With a belt around the waist and the animal print details on the wrists and collar, this coat looks very glamorous and elegant.

My 17th Sketch

My next sketch is a very simple dress, preferable in yellow and black. I got the color inspiration from the natural color of common bees, which represents spring season. So I guess this design is a spring dress. It's flappy near the bottom parts and not at all complicated.

Right now I am continuing my report, and I am thinking of several Ideas i would like to include in my report when i hand them in at the end of the project. My vision is to research on different types of cloth/materials, and about fashion which evolved from time to time, including the trends and well-known brands from all over the world in the fashion industry.

My 16th Sketch

Tonight I was in a very good mood for sketching, and so I have been browsing around in the internet to find inspirations. And I have decided to make a design combination of a simple dress/or skirt, which ever works best, and a thin silver jacket. What inspired me to make a silver jacket are two things:
- this picture i saw of Zac Efron wearing a really great silver jacket
- and this novel series I've been reading recently, Uglies, by Scott Westerfeld. ( it is a novel with a futuristic world as a setting)

those things made me very excited to design a futuristic and glamorous outfit. I myself thinks it looks great and feminine.

My 15th Sketch

Today I am absent from school because I have come down with a bad flu, so I took my time at home to make another sketch. It is a dress in bright red chiffon. It is quite a simple dress, but the details i put in makes it much more glamorous. From top to the waist, the chiffon needs to be made with small ruffles/i prefer calling it the wrinkle-effects, creating a messy kind of look, and from there to the hip part is basically a few layers of red chiffon structured in a way so it looks puffy and big. The idea is to sew the material in a way an elementary school's uniform is made. It is basically bigger ruffles, and the chiffon material will automatically make it puffy.

Below is a visual example of what i mean by making big ruffles in layers, making the dress puffy. image taken from http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/zandila/sewing051.jpg. and http://www.edressme.com/b03053r.html#

My 14th Sketch

Today I finally designed my 14th clothing. It is a design of an idea i had quite a long time ago. It takes the form of a short dress, preferably in gold. I include a cloth put diagonally, preferably in pearl white, across the front to the back of the dress. What inspired me to make this dress is the ancient Greek clothing I've been quite interested in since I was a kid (from the cartoon movie, Hercules by Disney Productions). :D I think it looks great but the detailing i put on the bottom part of the dress, which is all small ruffles, might make it harder to make.
