I see the tailor again today. I have 2 more designs finished.. and I gave her the rest of the materials...
It is going very well with the tailor because she understands my sketches, and she is very detailed with the drawings that i gave her. Every detail she would ask to me and i would answer to explain a few parts that is not included in the drawing. Occasionally she would reach me by phone at lunch break in school, and i would even talk to the cutter or pattern writer in the tailor so I can make sure they know what they are doing.
The tailor cannot come tomorrow so I'm giving my 3 last designs today.
NOTE: My partner and I realized that there might not be enough time to conduct a fashion show for the charity. Therefore we has to think of another way to present our product. I decided to make a simple catalogue instead. My supervisor will be noticed ASAP.

My Last Material-Shopping
This time, I am shopping at again, next to D'Best. The place is called Gossip textile shop. I am even beginning to get to know a few people in the store. The store keeper himself, probably he's from Middle Asia, such as India or Pakistan, helped me picking out the suitable materials. He himself designs the materials and patterns that the store is selling. He designs clothes too, i found out after talking to him more. He gave me advices on how thick the materials should be to make certain clothes, different for jackets, dresses and blouses.
Today I bought a purple jacket material and a replacement for that yellow material which was too thick. I bought the chiffon ones and I got great advice on that material from the shop keeper too. He talked about whether I needed the silk chiffon or regular chiffon, what they are used for, etc.

Seeing the Tailor Again.
Today I am seeing the tailor again to give her my 2 designs to be made. Which is the pink long dress and blue tutu dress. These are my favorite designs so I hope it'll turn out great too. It was first difficult to think of the easiest way to structure the dress with the perfect sewing techniques, and then I went on the internet to look for examples of frills, tutus and some other details, and showed it to her. I know realize that even how detailed a sketch is, we still might need examples, and a way of communicating that can explain it to the tailor clearly. Thankfully she's a fast learner and surprisingly enough I understand everything she's saying to me regarding the details, which means this tailor suits me the best.

Important Problem, and a Solution to go with it.
1. My Tailor yesterday only brought the 3 designs instead of 4 which i left her with last week, because one of the design seems kind of complicated. She brought the material back to my house yesterday and talked the problem out. The problem is, the yellow matterial which is made of pineapple tree, is too tough on the chiffon black material, which means it wouldn't fall as gracefully as the black chiffon.
2. She asked if I still want to use this material, but I was thinking, it wouldn't look good, wouldn't feel good (uncomfortable), and would probably be a waste of money D: So what we did was discuss it for quite a bit of time, and we considered a few ideas, such as changing the composition of the materials when sewed, a different sewing technique, and finally, the solution of the problem; to simply go with a different material for the yellow color. It would be the best solution because we can find a light weight material, perhaps the same as the black one, chiffon. It would fall in place easily, and would fall loosely on the black material.
3. First I felt a bit sad because I really like that yellow material, it's made out of pineapple plant woven together, has a different texture and look naturally shiny, perfect for a dress like the one I designed. I first thought it would be perfect, but of course there is no other way to make it work. If I don't change the material, there will be no yellow-black dress.

My 3rd, 4th, and 5th Designs are Finished
I especially woke up early this morning because I have made an appointment with my tailor. I have actually been in contact with her over the phone every 3 days to check on the dresses, and to make sure she knows that she can call me anytime if anything needs to be asked directly about to me. I also told her that she should contact me anytime outside school time, which she had forgotten about once, but thankfully I didn't get trouble for it at school.
She brought in my high waist batik skirt, my black medium-lengthed dress, and my maroon strapless dress. We did quite a long fitting, to make sure it fits nicely, no zippers are stuck, no buttons are loose, and stuff like that. For the Maroon strapless dress I had to let her bring it back to the tailoring to fix the chest part to make it a little bit tighter, which I recommend we do so that it wont slip down accidentally. Overall i love the results and they look exactly like what my designs look like in the sketches, and I thank my tailor so much for that.
What I have realized in the process of this fittings, I learned about new stitching techniques, how the process is done in the tailor, what steps they do and who do them. I found out that:
- firstly they try to make the design with a similar material which they have in their supplies, to make sure it will turn out good and proportional with the stitching and other details that I wanted them to have.
- if it works as planned, they then make a pattern on the dress before it is being cut. They do this with the measurements ready in hand as a guide.
- After that, they cut the dress pattern
- Sew the dress into place
- Seam the edges of the dress
- Put details such as zipper, or buttons.

Personal Project Meeting #11
18th of March 2009
Items Discussed:
Bu Sarah gave me the corrected sheets of our draft report. We'll be typing up the corrected things, and continue to do the report. I made sure some things about the report, and Bu Sarah told me that the 4000 words is maximum in the report, and not minimum. this actually made me think over about the whole report, careful not to get over the limit. Good thing I asked because I firstly thought it was the maximum number of words in the final report.
Problems;
No problems encountered here
Achievements:
Able to see the mistakes or things to be added to improve the report.
Understand the limit of words in the final report.
I have read Jenisa Kamayana's journal entries and blogspot and the information provided is true, detailed and accurate.

Tailoring Once More
This saturday, I asked my tailor if she was available to come to my house, where I squeezed in the time between basketball tournaments. I only got to see her in half an hour because I had to go immediately to continue the tournament. Fortunately I managed to explain 4 designs of mine in detail and hand her over all the materials needed. SHe had me all measured for each of the designs.

But of course there is always some difficulties when it comes to explain a design to a tailor, because obviously it is sometimes so much more difficult for some one else to picture something that we created in our minds. This case happened while I was explaining to the tailor, there were some confusion and she kept asking so many detailed question, so I ended up explaining all the small things, every detailing and asking several different stitching/sewing methods that will might be useful for each of the different dresses. I even learned some new sewing technique names, which I found very interesting and new.
She said she'll try bring all of them finished on next Saturday, 21st of March 2009, and then I will give her another 4 dress to sew. I am planning to visit her sometime during the holidays.

My Fixed up Batik Shorts
I picked up the batik shorts today after school and tried it at home to see how the fixing went. It fits perfectly and there are no excess materials poking out of the bottoms, which is a good thing. As I predicted, I didn't need to pay more on the seaming so the cost of the tailor stayed at Rp. 80 000.
I will post a photo of it tonight, along with my red blouse. The bag will be finished on Saturday and I am looking forward to see it.

Going Back to the Tailor

image taken from http://www.clipartguide.com/_named_clipart_images/0511-0707-1812-2106_Sewing_Kit_clipart_image.jpg
After school today, I went to the tailor near the school to ask her to fix the errors i ended up discovering. She said it won't be a problem to fix it, and it won't take a long time to do it. So i left it there, and I am planning to pick it up again in a few days.
The amount of money I spent on the tailoring was 80.000 and it is considered quite cheap. I suppose I don't have to pay more to cover the fixing ups, and that is quite a good thing, because one of the goals in my personal project is to be affordable.

My Batik Shorts are Finished
I called my tailor yesterday and asked about the progress on my shorts. She said it was finished and i can take it as soon as possible. So today I went there in the afternoon and retrieved it. I tried it on for the rest of the day, to see if it fits right and if there is anything to fix.
As it turned out, i realized that i need some fixing up on it. The inside layer is a little bit longer than the outer layer of the shorts, and i think that is kind of a crucial mistake. Also the pocket layers poke out of the bottom seam, and i guess that needs fixing up too. I will go back to the tailor immediately to address the errors. But overall I am quite satisfied on how the shorts turned out looking like a very stylish piece of clothing.
